The Old Gaol

The Old Eshowe Gaol

The original gaol in Eshowe is currently being re-furbished by the Department of Public Works, apparently to provide a provincial headquarters for the Department of Correctional Services, although there are also rumours that it will be used to provide offices for President Jacob Zuma during his retirement.  A place of executions by the previous South African regime – the gallows are apparently still intact – the old gaol is an architectural masterpiece, with a twin-turret façade that bears an uncanny resemblance to the logo of South Africa’s most iconic beer, Castle Lager.
